Department of History

Welcome to the Department of History!

From Ancient Greece to the Atlantic World to the American Revolution, we offer a variety of courses taught by innovative faculty who are experts in their fields. This coursework spans an array of thematic, geographical, and chronological contexts, invoking big questions about change and illuminating important human connections and continuities. Our committed, award-winning faculty privilege the classroom as a site of curiosity, collaboration, and exchange of ideas. We are committed to caring, personalized mentorship of students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

By studying the past, students will gain perspective as well as develop highly sought-after skills in critical thinking, archival research, comparative analysis, and engaging writing. We offer many opportunities for experiential learning through education abroad and internships– like presenting at an academic conference, developing a Public History mural, participating in archeological excavation in Malta, or mapping local landmarks. Whether in the classroom, archives, or field, our students learn practical, broadly applicable skills that are both desired by employers and necessary for a robust moral citizenry.

Thanks to the universal value of a history degree, graduates from the UNA History Department have careers in education, law, museums and archives, business, and beyond. They have pursued their bright futures with a deep understanding of the past that brings rich perspective and desirable flexibility.

So come see what History at UNA is all about! We would love to have you join our community of scholars, storytellers, and lifelong learners.

Studying history taught me so much and made me a better person. It changed my outlook on many things... many issues remain unchanged and need attention. Learning about historical struggles inspired me to become an attorney to help people who need legal support. Many people can’t afford an attorney or don’t receive the help they need. I’ve always loved helping people, and history showed me the areas where change is necessary, which led me to pursue law.

As a criminal defense attorney, people come to me on the worst day of their lives. So learning about how people are oppressed and how history repeats itself really shaped my perspective... Coming into this work with a history-based knowledge really helps me be more empathetic toward my clients. I’m not surprised by how the system treats them, because the criminal legal system reflects our nation’s story too. UNA definitely helped push me out of my comfort zone, and I know that contributed to me becoming a lawyer. You have to speak in front of people, be organized, and be personable—UNA helped shape me into who I am.

UNA taught me how to ask critical questions about sources—understanding who created them, their purpose, and the underlying messages. These skills go beyond academics; they help in everyday life, whether it’s evaluating news articles, advertisements, or online information, which has been invaluable in my research. I believe that learning history makes us better thinkers, more compassionate individuals, and stronger communicators.
